How our funding works

We're building our support in phases, starting with learner awards, special projects, and scholarships.

Phase 1: Now

Learner Awards, Scholarships, & Special Projects

Over the last number of years, our organization is proud to have presented over 500 learner awards and funded multiple special education projects, distributing over $300,000 in funds. During this phase we're working with trusted partners, like Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, to identify worthy recipients of our awards & funding. No funding applications are needed at this stage.

Phase 2:
Coming soon!

One of the foundation's primary goals of 'phase 2' is to grow our donor list of passionate stakeholders who are willing to invest in Mi'kmaw Education

As our foundation grows and evolves, our goal is to expand our capacity and reach by growing our family of donors, passionate steakholders in Mi'kmaw Education who share our vision for the future!

Phase 3: Future Directions

Phase Three of our organization will be marked by the expansion of funding opportunities and flagship initiatives.

As we grow, the heart of the foundation is to see Mi'kmaw-led educational initiatives thrive: bringing fresh life to the language, cultural activites, and individuals pursuing their educational dreams.

Our plan is to see growth in three streams of funding, including named scholarships, student education & living funds, and traditional language & cultural funds. Each of these funds will eventually accept applications from across Nova Scotia First Nations.

How "phase 1" is reaching learners

We’re helping students pursue their dreams by supporting and rewarding outstanding academic achievement, leadership, character, and community involvement — from elementary, middle, and high school recognition programs to scholarships for university, college, trades, and medical studies. Through these initiatives, we are helping a new generation of Mi’kmaw leaders step into rewarding careers and create positive change in their communities.

Our programs recognize students not only for academic excellence, but also for perseverance, innovation, attendance, improvement, citizenship, and leadership. Students are also recognized for excelling in areas such as math, reading, music, sports, STEM, language, and culture, while demonstrating kindness, optimism, responsibility, and positive leadership among their peers.

In addition to these student awards, we support treaty education workshops, language initiatives, and land- and sea-based learning opportunities that connect youth to culture, community, and a deeper understanding of Mi’kmaw ways of knowing.

What's coming

Direct applications set to open in future phases.

During phase two & three of our foundation, we will work towards accepting applications with a broader funding approach.

Organizations and learners will have new pathways to access support for Mi'kmaw-led education initiatives.
